Today is Flag Day

Today is the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the United States Flag by Congress.

On this day the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act in 1777. It states, “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” Our flag has gone through 26 changes since then.

In 1949, President Harry Truman officially proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day.

President Taft signed an executive order on June 24, 1912 our flag standardizing our flag with the stars placed in six rows of eight each.

President Dwight Eisenhower changed the flag twice in 1959 by adding a star for Alaska and later Hawaii.

Our current flag was designed by a high school student from Lancaster, Ohio, Robert G. Heft who was given a B-minus for his assignment for his efforts. His teacher did offer to alter his grade if Heft could get congress to adopt his design. Undaunted Heft persisted and Congress approved his design.

The picture of the flag was taken at the Florham Park Little Red School House on the corner of Columbia Turnpike and Hanover Avenue. Attached to the front wall is a brass placard to commemorate the “Florham Park residents who served during WWII many suffering great hardships and great risks and even death. Their names are inscribed upon rolls of honor inspiring future generations to love of home, duty, to country and freedom to all men.”
