Neighboring the town of Morristown, Hanover Township is a small, pastoral suburban town of approximately 14,000 people. The sprawling, 10-square-mile township, which provides quick and easy access to Morristown Municipal Airport. The town also includes two unincorporated communities, Cedar Knolls and Whippany.
Many Hanover Township residents head into Morristown to enjoy nightlife, to dine, and to shop. This is, in part, because Hanover Township lacks a true downtown center. Nonetheless, the township does feature several municipal parks, such as Bee Meadow Park and Pool, Central Park, and Malapardis Park. Because George Washington and his troops hiked through and camp in Hanover Township, it now is a main artery for the national historical trail, the Patriot’s Path.
The Whippany Rail Museum is also located in Hanover Township. Since 1965, the museum has been commemorating and preserving New Jersey’s railway history. The train rides at the museum have always been for tourists only; for example the very popular excursion train rides and, formerly, a steam-fueled tourist railroad.
Due to Hanover’s location in Morris County, it is not an ideal commuter community for professionals needing to head into New York City. It takes roughly 50 minutes to drive from Hanover Township through the Holland Tunnel and into Manhattan’s Lower East Side. To access uptown via the George Washington Bridge, it takes slight more than an hour to drive.
Unlike some of its neighboring towns, Hanover Township doesn’t have a train station. Commuters can take the Morris & Essex Line from Morristown to New York Penn Station, a train ride that’s one hour and 15 minutes long.
Of New Jersey’s 611 school districts, Hanover Township is ranked 213th. The township does not have its own high school. Instead, high school students attend Hanover Park Regional High School District along with students from East Hanover and Florham Park.
